The Department of Education, Training, and Research of Prince Sultan Cardiac Center Qassim has successfully holds the 5th Conscious Sedation Course and Workshop on February 26-27, 2019 at PSCCQ Conference Room. This was attended by 50 participants from various hospitals in Qassim Region.

The program kicked off with a broad discussion on the General View of Moderate Sedation given by Dr. Mutasim Hammad. It was learned that moderate sedation refers to a drug-induced depression of consciousness during which patients respond purposely to verbal commands, either alone or accompanied by light tactile stimulation. Care guides for moderate sedation and everything about this matter were also thoroughly explained.

Dr. Musaab Tom additionally discussed relevant topics on Pre-sedation Evaluation including Patient Selection, History and Physical Examination, Airway Assessment, ASA Physical Status Classification and Contraindications. A pre-sedation assessment is very important to identify high-risk patient populations and anticipate and reduce adverse sedation events. This was indeed a great discussion knowing that it inculcated many essential facts about pre-sedation.

Furthermore, Dr. Aymen Abdul Ghader conducted another lecture about Pre-procedural Preparation that includes Fasting Time, Patients at Risk for Pulmonary Aspiration, Pre-Medication, and Equipment and Medication Checklist. He completely discussed the components and guidelines of pre-procedural preparation, as well as all its essential details.

Subsequently, the sequence of activity continued with another lecture from Dr. Mutasim Hammad. He talked much about what should be done during the procedure inclusive of Monitoring Pulse Oximetry and Ventilation versus Oxygenation. Pulse Oximetry is now available as part of the bedside monitoring system in most critical care units. He also discussed the Monitoring Capnography and Respiratory Physiology. Capnography is commonly used in the operating room and is popular in some critical care units. Monitoring the respiratory is an essential tool in the management of the critically-ill an anesthetized patient.

Dr. Mohamed Shoman expanded the lectures by discussing Hemodynamic Monitoring ECG, and Arrhythmias, Non-invasive BP monitoring as well as Volume Status. A comprehensive discussion of Management of Common Complications was given by Dr. Khaledah Bekdash.

As the activity resumed, a clear explanation on Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Conscious Sedation Medications was shared by Dr. Musaab Tom. He emphasized that everyone needs to be familiar with this in order to help alleviate the condition of the patient. A lecture on Discharge Criteria was presented by Dr. Rohith Raja Rajamani.

On the second day, a demonstration workshop was jointly facilitated by Dr. Mutasim Hammad, Dr. Musaab Tom, and Rohith Raja Rajamani.  This was to practically engage the participants in the actual demonstration of the lectures being imparted.

The day ended with a Post-course Evaluation Examination. This was a way of determining how far they have grasped the thoughts and contents of the lectures.

Dr. Mutasim Ahmad Hammad, Course Director was satisfactorily happy with the successful result of the event.
