PSCCQ successfully conducts the 6th Basic Adult Cardiology Review Course

The Department of Education, Training, and Research of PSCCQ successfully conducted the 6th Basic Adult Cardiology Review Course on September 11-12, 2017 at PSCCQ Conference Room. This 2- day course was also accredited by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties for 15 CME hours. The first day unfolds with the registration of participants wherein the list showed off a number of 35 attendees.

Dr. Mohammed Saied, the Consultant Cardiologist, was the first speaker who discussed Mitral Valve Disease. He gave a general outlook about this particular ailment. It was learned that this refers to the irregular conditions of the Mitral Valve which is located between the two left chambers of the heart and it works to keep blood flowing properly in one direction from the left atrium to the left ventricle and prevents it from flowing backward.

The second speaker, Consultant Cardiologist, Dr. Rahim Gul explained an overview of Aortic Valve Disease which refers to a condition in which the valve between the main pumping of the chamber of the heart and the main artery to the body doesn't work properly.

Dr. Asim Ganawa, Special Cardiologist had a thorough lecture about Basic ECG. He presented and shared a fact that needs to be learned about electrocardiogram or ECG.

The next lecturer was Dr. Murtada Hussein, Consultant Cardiologist. He gave a further lecture on Arrhythmias. He pointed out that this is a problem regarding the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat.


Dr. Mohamed Al Dakheel, the Consultant Cardiologist, discussed Cardiomyopathy. This refers to the diseases of the heart muscles and furthermore talked about its causes, signs, symptoms, and treatment.

A discussion on Basic Echocardiography was presented by Dr. Mohammed Saied. He shared insights on the basic knowledge of echocardiography as well as the recent advances in its applications.

The first day ended with the last lecture given by Dr. Adil Bashir, Specialist Cardiologist who lectured on the Basic Cardiac Laboratory. It is deemed important to perform a laboratory or screening test when it deals with this illness so it can be detected as early as possible.

The second day of the course commenced with a comprehensive discussion about Heart Failure which was shared by Dr. Mohamed Al Dakheel. This occurs when the heart muscles don't pump blood as well as it should. Not all conditions that lead to heart failure can be reversed, but treatments can improve the signs and symptoms and help the patient live longer.

Dr. Rahim Gul shared very important details and information about Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS). This often causes severe chest pain or discomfort. It is a term used to describe a range of conditions associated with sudden, reduced blood flow to the heart.

Furthermore, Dr. Murtada Hussein presented a lecture on Hypertension which is also commonly known as High Blood Pressure. This occurs when the blood pressure increases to unhealthy levels. Hypertension can strain the heart, damage the blood vessels, and increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney problems and even death.

Accordingly, Dr. Adil Bashir talked much on Dyslipidemia/Metabolic Syndrome. This refers to one of the most common metabolic disorder wherein there is an abnormal amount of lipids in the blood.

Another lecture regarding the Cath Lab Basics was discussed by Dr. Rahim Gul. He shared the basic information and important details about Cath Laboratory.  More so, Dr. Gul also facilitated the throwing in of Self Assessment Questions. This will indicate how far the participants have learned and how much knowledge and information have they acquired in the whole run of the lectures.

Dr. Mohammed Saied, the Course Organizer was so elated with the successful turnout of the activity. He was overwhelmed with the response of the participants and likewise, he is also hoping that this will happen again in the years to come.
